Even though I'm a Northlander born and bred, somehow Dargaville and its environs have largely passed me by. Or rather should I say I have largely passed them by as I head blithely further north. But the southern end of the Kauri Coast, which I explored one wild and windy three-day weekend, has charms of its own. As always you just need to know where to look.
Enroute I paused in Ruawai, as I'd heard nothing but good reports about
regional award winning institution ElleCeé Cafe and I wasn't disappointed
one bit. Everything, just everything, Catherine Stewart, the proprietor and
cook, tempted me with was worth the brief detour off SH1 it would take if
you were heading further north.

Posted 8 days ago by Brydon in Cafés
All of us here at Atomic congratulate every winner in this years New Zealand 2010 Best Cafe Awas and in particular all those serving Atomic Coffee. Ruth and Andy at Colenso Cafe on the Coromandel took out the national overall runner up, winner Coromandel/Thames. This is well deserved recognition for many years of the very finest food, coffee and service.
Up in Ruawai, the winner of the Hokianga/Kauri Coast region was Elle Cee cafe, a recent convert to Atomic's Veloce blend. Owner Catherine, who's smiling face adorns a feature later in the magazine, is in fact the daughter of long time Colenso staff member Carol Whitford. A passion for hospitality must run in the veins.
